School counselors can serve to assist teachers with learning using cognitive strategies across the school year. This initiative has counselors and teachers working together to directly impact student achievement. A teacher staff development model faciltated by counselors will be presented. The presenter will also address ways to evaluate the effectiveness of such an initiative.

Defining the relationship between school counselors and mental health counselors in school-based mental health programs

This presentation will create clarity, definition, and dialogue about the respective roles of the school counselor and agency-based licensed mental health counselor in school-based mental health programs. Participants will develop an understanding of the role of the New York Office of Mental Health, county departments of mental health/community services, and of private licensed mental health agencies in the delivery of school-based mental health services. Participants will learn about the NYS Office of Mental Health scponsored Child Mental Health Clinic Plus initiative and the respective roles of the school counselor and the agency-based licensed mental health counselor in this initiative.

Communicating our effectiveness: Action research skills for school counselors

This presentation focuses on helping participants develop action research skills for use in school settings. Participants will learn how to articulate their effectiveness as school counselors by identifying student needs, developing corresponding goals, identifying interventions, and measuring outcomes.

Running effective student support groups

This presentation will provide participants with information on how to form student support groups in school settings and how to effectively set up norms for these groups. The presenters will utilize Yalom's therapeutic factors of group work and show how they can be applicable in support groups in schools. The presenters will also present data that show how effective group participation can be on student academic achievement.
